Dunore to Hydepark
Project Brief:
Replacing the ageing 1960s pipeline running from Dunore Water Treatment Works at Lough Neagh to Hydepark Service Reservoir in Mallusk was part of a major investment to improve water and wastewater treatment services across the Northern Ireland water supply network. An increasing number of the 3,500 joints on the old 17-km line were proving to be ineffective with more and more leakage and on occasions even bursts occurring.
This important transmission system, which represented one of two essential large diameter trunk mains in Northern Ireland, transferred between 130 and 150 million litres of water every day to around 400,000 consumers across Belfast and Co. Antrim.
Solutions:
Commissioned by Northern Ireland Water, our specialist civil engineers delivered the award winning £24 million scheme in joint venture with John Murphy & Sons.
The works included the detailed design, construction and commissioning of the new Dunore to Hyde Park Trunk Main, 18 km long, through predominantly agricultural land, Mallusk Industrial Estate Area, and 2 fairways of Belfast City golf course.
The new main was constructed of 1300mm and 1400mm diameter pipe. The ancillary works included connections at Dunore WTW and Hyde Park Service Reservoir Mallusk, various off-takes and associated valves and chambers. Around 1½ tonnes of water flow every second along this modern piece of infrastructure, delivering up to 180 million litres of high quality drinking water daily to around 400,000 homes and businesses throughout Belfast and County Antrim; significantly reducing the amount of water lost through leakage in the previous concrete water supply network and achieving compliance with EU directives.
To minimise disruption to the public along its route, the Joint Venture utilised trenchless construction techniques for major road and river crossings.
This contract won the 2008 CEF Specify Construction Exellence Award for Partnering.
