Vieques National Wildlife Reserve Road Rehabilitation
Project Description:
Endangered species at a Caribbean wildlife reserve are being protected following infrastructure improvement works carried out by Lagan Construction’s international team.
Situated eight miles off the coast of Puerto Rico, the tiny island of Vieques is an area of ecological, archaeological and historic significance containing several ecologically distinct habitats including beaches, coastal lagoons, mangrove wetlands and upland forested areas as well as some of the best examples of sub-tropical dry forest in the Caribbean. It is home to at least two plants and eight animals on the US Federal endangered species list including the West Indian manatee, the Brown Pelican and four types of sea turtles.
Lagan Construction were commissioned by the US Department of Transportation, Eastern Federal Lands Highways Division, to repair 20km of local rural roads within the reserve. A significant amount of earthworks was carried out and new culvert pipes of 18“ and 24“ daimerter were installed at creek crossings after which the roads were resurfaced with 33,000T of graded aggregate in keeping with the natural surroundings.
