A1 Dualling

Beechill, Northern Ireland

Client: DRD Roads Service
Contract Period: March 2004 – November 2006
Contract Value: £18 million

Project Brief
The project involved construction of 7.3km of new trunk road on the A1 from Loughbrickland to Beechill in Northern Ireland for Roads Services. Some 17,000 vehicles use this busy stretch of road each day and extensive traffic management was therefore required throughout the works.

Solutions
Two 7.3km carriageways were constructed, each with a 3.5m hard shoulder and separated by a 10m wide central median. The stretch of road also incorporated a 3m wide cycle/pedestrian path and two underpasses built from reinforced concrete and mass retaining walls.

Other infrastructure works included the construction of five structures and three buried earth underpasses along with two reinforced earth embankments. In total, 600,000m³ of earth was excavated, 500,000 tonnes of stone was imported, 2000,000 tonnes of blacktop surfacing and 20,000m³
