The Office of Public Works has awarded Lagan Construction a €14.5M Flood Alleviation Scheme in Fermoy, County Cork. The 18 month contract is due to commence in May 2012.
Lagan Construction will be working with Consultants TJ O’Connor and Associates to deliver the 1.5km scheme of which 1.1km of flood alleviation will be walls supported on 2,600No Continuous Flight Auger Secant Piles. Other works will include 0.4km of 5metre high clay flood embankments, reinforced concrete works, masonry cladding, aluminium pull up barriers, natural stone paving, storm and foul pipelines as well as carrying out black top surfacing.
The contract also involves the construction of 4No pumping stations including Mechanical & Electrical works which will have an approximate volume of 500 m3 each.
Generally the depth of water which the site team will be working in, close to the river’s edge, will be 1.0metre. During heavy rainfall, and within 2 days, this water depth can increase to 4 metres, and some adjacent roads within the town will be covered with 1.5metres depth of water.

Northern Ireland firm Lagan Construction Ltd will deliver £50M of Civil Engineering work on a new Energy from Waste plant (EFW) in Cardiff which has an overall value of £185M. Lagan Construction will work in Joint Venture with the French-based process company CNIM to design and build the new facility for Viridor Waste Management Limited.
The location of the EFW plant is on a 4.5 hectares site within Trident Park which is situated 1.6 kilometres to the south-east of Cardiff City Centre and north of the Cardiff Docks. The new state-of-the-art facility will have the capacity for approximately 350,000 tonnes per annum of residual Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and Commercial and Industrial Waste (C&I), which will be sourced from within the South-East Wales area. All of the waste accepted at the facility will be non-hazardous.
The facility will incorporate modern reliable and well understood technologies and will be designed in accordance with the latest standards will employ Best Available Techniques.
The civil engineering elements which will be carried out in this prestigious contract represent approximately 25% of the contract value.

Lagan Construction and their partners Technical Associates Pakistan Limited together with the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority is celebrating as a plane carrying the Defence Minister of Pakistan, The Honourable Ch. Ahmad Mukhtar landing at the newly completed runway. The Defence Minister was accompanied by Secretary Defence Mc Nargis Sethi who is also the Chairperson of Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority. This will go down in the history as the first dignitaries to land at this precious National Project.
In a major international coup, Lagan Construction working with local partners was selected to deliver both the airside and landside contracts at the new Benazir Bhutto International Airport with contract value of £156 million. The new airport is located on 3,200 acres of land, a 30 minute drive from cities Fateh Jang and Rawalpindi.
The new state of the art airport will serve as a major hub for all aviation activities in the region. It is the first Greenfield airport in Pakistan and will comprise of a contemporary passenger terminal building, control tower, runway with a provision of a secondary/emergency runway, fast exit taxiways, aprons and a cargo complex together with all the necessary infrastructure and ancillary works.

Lagan Construction will deliver £45million in civil and building infrastructure works at a major new energy-from-waste plant being developed near Ipswich.
The contract was awarded by recycling and resource management company SITA UK in October 2010 to CNIM/Lagan JV as part of their £1 billion PFI deal with Suffolk County Council to develop an energy-from-waste facility to manage the county’s residual household waste.
Lagan Construction will work with their French based process partner CNIM on the project at Great Blakenham which has an overall construction value of £150 million. The scheme received planning consent on 21st July 2011. Work is expected to start on site in early 2012 with the energy-from-waste facility likely to be up and running by December 2014.
The energy-from-waste facility was designed by architect firm Grimshaw who took inspiration from Suffolk’s open skies to create an eye-catching and unique design. The facility will feature a state-of the-art glazed visitor centre, landscaped wetland area and an on-site ash processing facility.
The £1bn value of the PFI waste deal is comprised of total revenues from the council, third party waste and the sale of electricity. Suffolk County Council estimates the contract will create savings of £350m in additional expenditure over the 25-year period as well as generating sufficient electricity to power 30,000 homes and saving the equivalent of 75,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.

Lagan Construction’s Water Mains Rehabilitation Team in Northern Ireland is delighted to have won the “Communications Award” at the National Joint Utility Group (NJUG) 2011 Awards Ceremony.
The awards took place on the 22nd November 2011 at the House of Commons in London. The evening was hosted by Louise Ellman MP, Chair of the Transport Select Committee, and included a keynote from Norman Baker MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport.
Six awards categories were presented on the night, each representing a statement of the ‘NJUG Vision’ for street works. Entries were open to utilities, contractors and local authorities and the winners were chosen by an independent panel of industry experts. Lagan Construction was one of three companies shortlisted for the Communications Award.

Lagan Construction is delighted to have signed a £80 million contract, part of the Guernsey Airport Redevelopment Project. Planning approval for the work at the airport was granted in October 2011. The works predominately include the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the existing airfield pavements including the runway, apron and taxiways and the installation of a new surface water drainage system.

Works are due to commence in January 2012 and will take approximately 2 years to complete.

Lagan Construction is delighted to have won the category of Finding New International Markets in the Northern Ireland Chamber Awards 2011.
Judges were looking for a company who “has demonstrated commitment to expanding internationally into new markets. Recent research has found that a growing number of UK companies are looking to capitalise on opportunities overseas. Many are still not realising the potential value of international trade, which is why this award is paying recognition to those who are leading the way”.
The Chamber Awards were launched by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) in 2004 to recognise and celebrate business excellence through the successes and achievements of its Accredited Chambers of Commerce and their members.

DBFO2 has won the Transport Infrastructure Award at the CEF Construction Excellence Awards 2011. The awards ceremony was held on Thursday 6th October 2011 at the Culloden Estate and Spa.
DBFO2 has also been shortlisted in the Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards 2011 for the category of Engineering Project of the Year.
The winning project will be judged based on the largest number of online votes received by midnight on Thursday 3rd November 2011.

The Council and Borough of Poole have appointed Lagan Construction to deliver a £2.8million redevelopment of Nuffield road Waste Transfer Station and Civic Amenity site in Poole, Dorset.
Lagan Construction will undertake this design and build contract which will include earthworks and demolition of the existing Waste Transfer Station. Works will also include the installation of two weighbridges complete with an office and a security office. Retaining walls and fencing will be constructed around the perimeter of the site.
The new Waste Transfer Station and Civic Amenity Centre will comprise of excavation works, steel portal frame and cladding, reinforced concrete and a newly laid asphalt surface. Fire main and holding tanks with dust and odour suppression systems will be incorporated into the design for the Waste Transfer Station.
The upgrade of the Waste Transfer Station and Civic Amenity Site is an integral part of the waste infrastructure for Poole as these works will secure the future of its Waste Management Strategy whilst meeting the regulatory requirements for Waste Permit and Health & Safety. The works will support the Council’s objective of Protecting Poole’s environment and reducing carbon footprint in the area.
Work is due to commence imminently and is due for completion in August 2012.
