Bessy Bell Wind Farm

Client: Airtricity
Contract Period: September 2007 – September 2008
Contract Value: £2.8 million

Project Description:
Our specialist teams have completed the latest of five wind farm construction projects for Airtricity at Bessy Bell in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. The £2.8 million scheme was constructed on an upland peat mountain site five miles north west of Omagh. Bessy Bell Mountain is an excellent location for a windfarm, towering up to 426m above sea level. Six 100m tall 1.5 MW wind turbines were erected creating a total output of 9 MW, capable of powering 6,000 homes.

The turbines were designed and constructed on a schist rock formation and carefully micro-sited to avoid disruption to telecommunication signals over the mountain top. We faced a number of challenges including transportation issues, environmental protection and peat monitoring as well as careful management of very sensitive ecology.

The turbines were built in ten sections and erected on 220m3 RCC concrete octagonal foundations. They were connected by a network of 33 kV and fibre optic cables to a 33 kV substation.
