Educating children about energy for the future

Children from a Ballymena primary school will have a chance to learn about sources of renewable energy at a special presentation by the companies behind the development of nearby Garves Wind Farm.

Lagan Construction, which delivered the 15MW wind farm in 2008, and operators Duncan Plant have come together as part of National Wind Week (12th to 20th June 2010) to help young people understand the huge benefits of harnessing nature to provide energy for the future.

The pupils learned how wind energy – a valuable natural resource – is set to play an increasingly more important role in our lives. They also got a unique insight into how the £2.2 million wind farm was built and commissioned, including some of the challenges that were overcome during its construction.

As part of their support for local communities, Lagan Construction and YEL are dedicated to educating young people about the wider world – including issues affecting the environment such as dwindling natural resources and sustainability.

To mark Wind Week they have also joined forces with Ballymoney Borough Council and Dunloy Development Association to host a four-mile circular walk in the vicinity of Garves Wind Farm to enable local people to find out more about energy efficiency and renewable technologies. The walk started from St Joseph’s Parish Centre Car Park, Dunloy at 7.00pm on 16th June 2010.
