Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport Airfield Improvements

Client: Puerto Rico Ports Authority
Contract Period: November 2004 – December 2007
Contract Value: US $70 million

Our reconstruction of Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico won a prestigious international award, beating off competition from more than 20 nominated schemes from leading contractors.

The project was named as Outstanding Civil Engineering Project of the Year by the Institute of Civil Engineers of Puerto Rico in recognition of the innovative programming and work methods which saw pavement quality concrete (PQC) produced on site in a bespoke 200 cubic metre per hour batching plant.

Work on Luis Muñoz Marin runway 10-28 was carried out during phased runway possessions throughout the construction period, enabling critical areas of the airport to remain operational throughout the refurbishment. Our team laid a total of 227,000m2 of PQC using a GHP 2600 slip form paver, 60,000m3 of granular base and 40,000 tonnes of asphalt in addition to new aircraft ground lighting and drainage systems.

The successful completion underlines our ability to bring specialist skills in runway improvement projects and PQC to the forefront, both in the UK and worldwide.
