LAGAN CONSTRUCTION WINS £45 MILLION ENERGY-FROM-WASTE SCHEME

January 18th, 2012

Lagan Construction will deliver £45million in civil and building infrastructure works at a major new energy-from-waste plant being developed near Ipswich.

The contract was awarded by recycling and resource management company SITA UK in October 2010 to CNIM/Lagan JV as part of their £1 billion PFI deal with Suffolk County Council to develop an energy-from-waste facility to manage the county’s residual household waste.

Lagan Construction will work with their French based process partner CNIM on the project at Great Blakenham which has an overall construction value of £150 million. The scheme received planning consent on 21st July 2011.  Work is expected to start on site in early 2012 with the energy-from-waste facility likely to be up and running by December 2014.

The energy-from-waste facility was designed by architect firm Grimshaw who took inspiration from Suffolk’s open skies to create an eye-catching and unique design. The facility will feature a state-of the-art glazed visitor centre, landscaped wetland area and an on-site ash processing facility.

The £1bn value of the PFI waste deal is comprised of total revenues from the council, third party waste and the sale of electricity. Suffolk County Council estimates the contract will create savings of £350m in additional expenditure over the 25-year period as well as generating sufficient electricity to power 30,000 homes and saving the equivalent of 75,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.

Commented Lagan Construction Managing Director Colin Loughran: “We are delighted to have won this prestigious contract and look forward to working with our Joint Venture partner CNIM in delivering this state of the art energy from waste facility for SITA UK and Suffolk County Council”

LAGAN CONSTRUCTION TO BUILD PIONEERING HI-TECH ENERGY PLANT

June 13th, 2011

Lagan Construction is to deliver the civil and building package in an innovative new wood pellet and biomass power plant at Girvan in Scotland in an industry first for low carbon energy specialist Land Energy.

The multi-million pound project will include the construction of an onsite biomass combined heat and power (CHP) plant to supply process heat and electricity to the new wood pellet factory.  In a UK first, wood pelleting and Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) power turbine technologies are being brought together.

The new facility is being built on the site of a former textile factory and once completed will generate enough wood pellets to provide sufficient heat energy for up to 15,000 homes. The timber used in the production process will be supplied locally from Scottish commercial forestry, ensuring the sustainability of this source of renewable energy.

Lagan Construction will undertake all the civil, structural and building works required to adapt the site including the conversion of three existing buildings which are being re-used as part of the new processing plant.

Work will be delivered in two phases beginning in early July with completion due in March 2012.

Wood fired CHP plants using ORC technology are highly efficient, converting up to 90% of the energy input into useful heat and power whilst achieving a net cut in CO2 emissions (this includes harvesting and transport of the wood) of more than 95% when compared to similar plants burning oil, gas or coal.

Commented Lagan Construction Managing Director Colin Loughran:  “We are delighted to be part of the team delivering this pioneering energy scheme.”
